Mattoon is located in east central Illinois equidistant from Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. With nearby roads, railways, rivers, and airports, the region boasts the most advanced multi-modal transportation network in the United States. Mattoon is also in close proximity to oil refineries and hydrogen customers who can share in the success of FutureGen.
Coles County is the home of Eastern Illinois State University and Community College. The region also contains two major state universities that lead in the fields of geology – the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana which is home to the Illinois Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability and Illinois State Geological Survey, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, home of SIU Coal Research Center.
