Mattoon, located in Coles County, is a town with a rich history that began when the Terre Haute and Alton railroad combined with the Illinois Central line in 1854. Mattoon was also once the home of Abraham Lincoln’s family and the site of a famous debate between Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in 1858. In 1940, Mattoon discovered oil, which resulted in significant population growth and business development.
